Methodology

How We Pick

We have not tested this equipment, and we say so on every page. This is the substrate we use instead, the rubric it produces, and the questions it cannot answer.

We have not tested any of the equipment on this site. We do not own it, we have no lab and no test fleet, and we do not accept free products. What we do instead is compile published manufacturer specifications, read the owner's manuals, apply a rubric you can see, and do arithmetic you can redo. This page sets out that process and its limits.

The plain statement

Every publisher ranking for these searches leads with a testing claim. One tests fourteen shovels in Lake Tahoe under a published weighted rubric. One runs an actual laboratory with named technicians. One tests in Montana at minus six degrees. Those are real operations doing real work.

We are not one of them, and we are not going to imply that we are. There is no test bench behind this site, no storm footage, and no unit in a garage that we have used for a season. Saying so is not modesty — it is the only thing that makes the rest of the site checkable.

What we did instead

The substrate we compete on is published specification, in a strict priority order. Every factual claim on this site traces back to one of these, and the source is named on the page.

  1. Manufacturer specification sheets and owner's manuals. The highest authority for what a product is: clearing width, intake depth, motor rating, tare weight, battery capacity, lowest effective temperature. Linked directly wherever we have used one.
  2. Published standards and institutional guidance. For the mechanisms rather than the products: how chlorides interact with concrete, what a de-icer's working temperature means, what a decking manufacturer permits in its own care documentation.
  3. Retailer listing data. Reliable for physical facts — dimensions, included accessories, pack sizes. Unreliable for marketing claims, and we treat it accordingly.
  4. Aggregated owner reports. Used only for durability signals that cannot be derived from a spec sheet, always labeled as owner reports, and never quantified with a number we did not count.

Where a manufacturer publishes a performance claim — a throw distance, a pounds-per-minute figure, a percentage strain reduction — we attribute it to them in the sentence. It is their number and we cannot verify it. Where sources conflict, we say so and show both.

The published rubric

Every product on this site carries a visible score out of ten across five criteria. The criteria differ by category and every one of them is readable off a specification sheet. That is the constraint: if a criterion can only be judged by using the tool, it does not belong in our rubric.

Scoring criteria by product category

The scores are an editorial judgment built from published figures, not a test result, and we say that under every score bar on the site. They are also deliberately not emitted as review or rating structured data. Marking up our own opinion as a product rating would tell Google we ran a review operation we do not run.

The arithmetic we do

This is the part that requires no equipment and that nobody else in this category publishes. Where a maker gives us numbers, we turn them into answers about your driveway.

  • Throughput to minutes. A maker states 840 pounds of snow a minute; a 20-by-40-foot driveway under six inches of snow holds very roughly two to four thousand pounds. That converts a marketing figure into a few minutes of machine time.
  • Battery energy in watt-hours. Volts times amp-hours. A two-pack 56 V 5.0 Ah kit holds 560 Wh; a 7.5 Ah kit holds 840 Wh. Fifty percent more work available, computed rather than felt.
  • Coverage per pound. A stated 100 square feet per pound means a 35-pound pail covers about 3,500 square feet — several storms on a normal driveway, and a way to budget a season.
  • Pass count from clearing width. A 30-inch pusher covers 67 percent more ground per pass than an 18-inch shovel, which on a 20-by-30-foot drive is roughly twelve passes instead of twenty.
  • Lever arm and lumbar load. The force on your lower back is the load times its distance from your hips. Doubling the distance doubles the strain without adding a pound.

Every one of those is reproducible. You can check the input figures against the manufacturer's own page and redo the multiplication. That is the point of choosing this substrate.

What we cannot tell you

Naming our blind spots is the most credible thing on this page, so here they are without hedging.

  • How a handle feels after forty minutes. Grip comfort, balance in the hand and whether a shovel is pleasant to use are experience questions. We can tell you a shovel weighs 3.5 pounds; we cannot tell you how it feels at minute forty.
  • Whether a plastic blade cracks in year three. Long-term durability requires a long term. We can tell you what a blade is made of and how polymers behave in cold; we cannot tell you what yours will do.
  • How a gas engine starts at minus twenty. We do not have one, we have not tried, and cold starting is exactly the sort of claim that needs a real winter behind it.
  • Whether a maker's stated throw distance is achieved in wet snow. Those figures are best cases on the maker's terms. We report them as theirs.
  • Which specific de-icer your decking warranty permits. That is a contract between you and your manufacturer, and their care document outranks us.

How products get on the list, and how they get cut

Products enter the shortlist from the keyword and category research we did before building the site: current models, actually sold, in categories real buyers search for. Every one is then resolved to a specific ASIN read off a live retailer listing, so the specification we quote and the product you can buy are the same object.

Products are excluded when we cannot verify a specification, when the category is not sold through our retailer, or when we conclude they are the wrong buy. The last case is published rather than hidden: every roundup on this site names at least one product to skip, including products we would earn a commission on. A comparison where everything wins is an advertisement.

We also recommend the cheaper option when it is right. On a driveway under about forty feet, a good pusher beats a snow blower on both cost and time, and we say so on the page rather than routing you toward the larger commission.

Prices, and why they sometimes disappear

Prices on this site come from a live price layer that refreshes from the retailer. They are date-stamped where they appear. If the data is older than 48 hours, the number disappears entirely and the button reads "Check price on Amazon" instead.

That is deliberate. A stale price is worse than no price, because it looks authoritative and is wrong. We would rather send you to look than tell you something we cannot stand behind. We never hand-write a price, a rating or a review count.

How we make money, and what it does not buy

We earn a commission when you buy through a link here, at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model and it is described in full on our disclosure page.

What it does not buy: placement, ranking, a favorable verdict, or the removal of a skip-this note. No manufacturer has ever paid to appear on this site, been offered the opportunity, or been shown a page before publication.

How we handle being wrong

Material factual errors get a dated correction note on the page itself rather than a silent edit. Typos and formatting are fixed quietly. If you find something wrong, tell us — a specification we have misread is exactly the sort of error this method is supposed to make easy to catch.

Money pages are reviewed before October 1 each year, ahead of the season. Damage and chemistry guides are reviewed annually and whenever a cited manufacturer updates its guidance. Every page carries a real last-updated date reflecting actual content change — the daily price refresh does not restamp it.

The trade we are making

Google's product review guidance asks for evidence of first-hand experience, quantitative measurement, coverage of alternatives, honest treatment of drawbacks, and a clear account of the decision factors in a category. We fail the first one outright and we can compete hard on the rest.

Being transparently short on one criterion beats faking all of them. If that changes — if the operator genuinely buys and uses a unit — we will document that experience, dated and scoped to the specific unit owned, and it will never be back-filled onto products we do not have.
