What size snow shovel should I buy?
An 18-inch combination blade with a published tare weight under about 5 pounds suits most driveways. Go narrower if your snow is typically wet and heavy, and wider only if it is reliably dry powder — a big blade filled with wet snow is a genuine injury risk. Then check the assembled length against your height: 50 inches or less will make anyone near six feet stoop. See snow shovels.
Is a snow pusher better than a snow shovel?
For the open area of a driveway, yes. A pusher slides snow off the surface instead of lifting it, which removes the motion that causes most shoveling injuries, and a 30-inch blade covers 67 percent more ground per pass than an 18-inch shovel. It cannot lift the windrow or cut a frozen plow ridge, so most households want both. See snow pushers.
Do I need a snow blower?
Under about 40 feet on a hard surface, usually not — a good pusher clears it in about ten minutes with nothing to store or charge. Machines earn their keep on area, depth, frequency and physical capacity. The throughput arithmetic is on snow shovel versus snow blower.
What is the difference between a single-stage and a two-stage snow blower?
A single-stage machine has one auger that gathers and throws, and it contacts the ground — so it clears to bare pavement and cannot be used on gravel. A two-stage machine has a separate auger and impeller, riding on adjustable skid shoes that hold the auger above the surface. That clearance is what makes gravel and uneven surfaces workable. Can I use a snow blower on a gravel driveway?
Only a two-stage machine, with the skid shoes set so the auger clears the stone by about an inch. Single-stage machines and powered snow shovels contact the ground by design and will throw stone 20 to 25 feet. This is a safety exclusion, not a preference. See gravel driveways.
Are electric snow blowers powerful enough?
For most residential driveways, yes. A 15-amp corded machine is rated by its maker at up to 840 pounds of snow per minute through a 22-by-13-inch intake. Where electric still loses is very long driveways and deep, dense snow over about a foot. See electric snow blowers.
Are there cordless snow shovels with wheels?
No. Every electric snow shovel in this class is carried in front of the body rather than pushed — adding wheels turns it into a small single-stage snow blower, which is a different product at a different price. If you want something that rolls, buy a blower. See electric snow shovels.
How long does a battery snow blower run?
It depends on stored energy and snow density. Compare in watt-hours: volts times amp-hours. A two-pack 56 V 5.0 Ah kit holds 560 watt-hours; a 7.5 Ah kit holds 840. One maker states up to 8 inches of snow on a 12-car driveway from a 5.0 Ah pair, as a best case. See battery snow blowers.
What is the best ice melt for concrete?
On mature, sealed concrete in sound condition, magnesium chloride or a CMA-blended product is the reasonable compromise. On concrete poured within the last twelve months, use a chloride-free product or nothing at all. See ice melt for concrete.
Does ice melt damage concrete?
It can, but not by dissolving it. De-icer keeps water liquid in the concrete's pores at temperatures where it would otherwise be frozen, so the surface goes through far more freeze-thaw cycles, and repeated expansion causes surface scaling. At what temperature does ice melt stop working?
It depends entirely on the chemistry. Rock salt effectively stops around 15 to 20°F. Magnesium chloride is published to -15°F, calcium chloride products to -40°F, and one chloride-free product publishes -2°F. Below your product's published floor, use grit for traction instead. Is pet safe ice melt actually safe for dogs?
It is less irritating and less likely to cause stomach upset than rock salt, which is a real improvement, but it is not edible and "pet safe" is not a regulated term. Chloride-free products remove the salt issue entirely. Wipe paws after every walk regardless of what you spread. See pet safe ice melt.
Should I put ice melt down before it snows?
Yes — a light pre-treatment on a clean, dry surface prevents ice bonding to the pavement, and uses a fraction of the product of breaking a bond afterward. The exception is if rain is forecast first, which washes it away. See when to apply ice melt.
Will ice melt damage my composite deck?
Check your decking manufacturer's published care and maintenance guidance — that document names which de-icers are permitted and it is what your warranty is written against. As a chemistry default, chloride-free products avoid both the board question and the corrosion question for the fasteners underneath. See ice melt and composite decking.
Is sand better than ice melt?
It is different, not better. Sand gives traction instantly at any temperature and melts nothing; de-icer removes ice but does nothing until it works. In deep cold, on new concrete, or on a slope where you need grip now, sand is the honest choice. See ice melt versus sand.
Is shoveling snow dangerous?
It carries a documented cardiac risk, because it combines cold air, sudden strenuous exertion and an isometric lift, usually first thing in the morning. Warm up, work in sessions, push rather than lift, and stop immediately for chest discomfort or breathlessness. See how to shovel snow properly.
How do I shovel snow without hurting my back?
Reduce the load and the distance it sits from your hips. Push instead of lifting, take half a blade, keep the shovel close to your body, step your feet to turn rather than twisting, and clear four inches twice rather than eight inches once. See how to shovel without back pain.

Why do some products show no price?
Prices come from a live data layer and are date-stamped. If that data is older than 48 hours the number disappears and the button reads "Check price on Amazon" instead. A stale price looks authoritative and is wrong, so we would rather send you to look.
Why do you recommend cheaper options sometimes?
Because they are often right. A 30-foot driveway needs a good pusher, not a snow blower, and saying so earns us less. A site that recommends the expensive option to everyone is not useful and does not deserve to be believed the one time the expensive option is genuinely correct.
