On a driveway under about forty feet on a hard surface, a 27- to 30-inch pusher plus a light scoop clears it in about ten minutes for a fraction of any machine's cost, with nothing to store, charge or maintain. Buy a machine when depth, frequency or physical capacity says so — not because the driveway exists.
The arithmetic on a small driveway
A single-car driveway is roughly 10 by 30 feet, or 300 square feet. Under four inches of fresh snow that is on the order of a few hundred to somewhat over a thousand pounds of snow, depending on density.
A 30-inch pusher covers 2.5 feet per pass, so the whole surface is about a dozen passes of 30 feet. At a normal walking pace that is a few minutes of actual work plus turning, and none of it involves lifting.
A machine does that faster. It also costs many times as much, needs storing for eight months, needs charging or fueling, and needs carrying out and putting away every time. On a small driveway the setup and teardown is a meaningful share of the job.

Wide, flat driveways
The Snowplow Original Snow Pusher, 30 in
A UHMW polyethylene blade that snow slides off rather than sticks to, in the width that actually changes your clearing time.
UHMW — ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene — is the material specification that separates this from a $25 pusher. It is the same family of plastic used for conveyor wear strips and truck-bed liners, chosen for a very low coefficient of friction and high impact resistance at low temperature. The practical consequence is that snow slides off it, including the heavy wet snow that packs solid onto a cheap blade and turns pushing into scraping.
The maker states the edge self-sharpens with use and needs no maintenance, and lists the tool as usable on concrete, blacktop, pavers, decks, roofs and ice rinks. That surface list is unusually broad and is the reason we recommend it where a metal edge would be a liability.
Width is the other half of the argument. A 30-inch blade covers 67 percent more ground per pass than an 18-inch shovel. On a 20-by-30-foot driveway that is the difference between roughly 20 passes and roughly 12 — and each of those passes is a push, not a lift.
It is not a complete answer. Nothing that pushes deals with the plow berm, and on a long driveway you eventually run out of anywhere to push to. Pair it with a shovel, or with a machine.
What works

A pusher that will not mark a surface

The single largest reduction in shoveling effort available to a homeowner is not an ergonomic handle. It is not lifting at all. A pusher slides the snow off the surface instead of picking it up, which removes the entire lift-and-throw motion that hurts people.
The constraint is that pushing only works while the snow is loose and while you have somewhere to push it to. On a 60-foot driveway you are moving snow 30 feet, and at some point the windrow in front of the blade is bigger than the blade. The technique is to push at an angle across the drive, peeling snow to the side in strips, not to bulldoze the whole length.
Poly is the right material here specifically because it is soft. Nothing on this tool can scratch a paver or a composite board, which is why it is our default recommendation on paver driveways and on decks.
It cannot chop. When the plow berm freezes you will need a steel edge or an ice chisel — the pusher will ride over the top of it.
What works
- No metal edge means no scratches on pavers, sealed asphalt or composite decking

Mid-size driveways on a budget
Snow Joe SJ625E 21-in Corded Snow Blower
A 21-inch, 15-amp machine at up to 800 lb/min — the SJ627E's slightly smaller, slightly cheaper sibling.
The SJ625E and the SJ627E are close enough that the choice is usually made on price and on one inch of width. Snow Joe states 800 pounds per minute here against 840 for the wider machine — a 5 percent difference that will never be noticeable in a driveway.
The specification that is genuinely missing is intake depth. The SJ627E publishes 13 inches; the SJ625E listing we read does not publish a figure at all. That matters in a deep storm, because intake depth is what decides whether you take one pass or two, and we are not going to assume the two machines share it.
Both are 15-amp corded single-stage machines with steel augers and 180-degree chutes, and both are subject to the same cord constraint: a heavy-gauge, cold-rated outdoor extension cord is not optional, and your working radius is however long it is.
If the price difference is small, take the SJ627E for the published depth spec and the second headlight. If it is not, this is a lot of capable machine for the money on a short or mid-size driveway.

Backs that already hurt
Snow Joe Shovelution SJ-SHLV01
A spring-assisted second handle moves the lifting load down the shaft, and at 3.5 lb the shovel itself adds almost nothing to what you lift.
The physics here are simple enough to check without owning one. A snow shovel is a lever, and the load on your lumbar spine depends on how far the weight sits from your hips. A conventional straight-shaft shovel makes your upper hand the fulcrum and your lower back the counterweight. The Shovelution adds a second, spring-loaded grip partway down the shaft, so the lower hand takes the lifting and the spine straightens earlier in the throw.
Snow Joe states the design reduces back strain by up to 30 percent. That is the manufacturer's number and we cannot verify it. What we can verify is the tare weight: 3.5 pounds for an 18-inch blade, which is genuinely low. Weight matters more than it sounds. Twelve pounds of wet snow on a 3.5-pound shovel is a 15.5-pound lift; the same load on a 6-pound steel shovel is 18 pounds, and you are doing it three hundred times.
The blade is poly with an aluminum wear strip. That combination is the right compromise for most driveways: poly is light and does not stick as badly as bare steel, and the aluminum edge keeps the leading lip from rounding off after two seasons. It is not a gravel tool — the wear strip will scoop stone and fling it, and on a composite deck it can leave marks.

Skip this one
An excellent machine and the wrong purchase for a 30-foot driveway. You would spend more on the batteries alone than on a complete manual setup, then store it for eight months a year to save a few minutes per storm. Buy it if your drive grows.
The steel auger is the reason this model exists. EGO's own comparison is against the SNT2102, which uses a rubber-edged auger, and they state the steel version cuts through ice and snow 50 percent faster. That is a manufacturer claim, but the underlying engineering is uncontroversial: a rigid steel edge bites crusted snow that a flexible one rides over.
It also changes where you can use it. A steel single-stage auger touches the ground — that is how single-stage machines clear to the surface — so on gravel it becomes a stone thrower, and on pavers or a sealed asphalt apron you want the highest skid setting and a slow walking pace.
EGO states up to 8 inches of snow on a 12-car driveway from two 5.0 Ah packs on one charge, and a throw distance up to 40 feet. Both are best-case figures on the maker's terms, and both are in the right order of magnitude for a two-battery 56V machine.
The warranty is the quiet signal. Five years on the tool and three on the batteries is longer than most of this category offers, and battery life is where cordless outdoor equipment usually disappoints. If your driveway is gravel, stop here and read that page instead — this is the wrong machine for it, whatever else it does well.

The two-tool setup
The complete answer for most short driveways is two manual tools, and it costs less than a single mid-range powered shovel.
A pusher, 27 to 30 inches. This does 80 to 90 percent of the work with no lifting: you walk the snow off the surface in angled strips. Poly or UHMW so it is safe on any surface.
A light scoop, 18 inches. For the windrow you accumulate at the edge, and for the plow berm at the road. Choose one with a published low weight — the lift is the part that hurts.

When a machine does make sense on a short drive
- Physical capacity. If shoveling is a medical constraint rather than an inconvenience, buy the machine. That is not a cost question.
- Frequency. Twenty clearable storms a season is a different proposition from five.
- Depth and density. A region that gets a foot of wet snow at a time makes hand clearing genuinely hard regardless of area.
- Time of day. If you must clear at 6 a.m. before work, minutes matter more than they do on a Saturday.
- A long walkway too. If the driveway is short but the path to the sidewalk is 80 feet, the total area may justify a machine.
If one of those applies, the right machine on a short hard-surface drive is a modest corded electric one. It is the cheapest real throughput available, it never needs charging, and on a short driveway the cord is trivially manageable because everything is near the house. See electric snow blowers.
