Compare cordless platforms in watt-hours, not volts: watt-hours equal volts times amp-hours. A 56 V 5.0 Ah pack holds 280 Wh; a 24 V 4.0 Ah pack holds 96. Voltage separately affects how well the tool holds speed under load. Both matter, and only one of them is on the front of the box.
The arithmetic that makes platforms comparable
Marketing compares platforms by voltage, which is misleading because voltage on its own says nothing about how much work a battery can do. The comparable figure is energy, and it is a one-line calculation:
That is why a 24 V shovel and a 56 V snow blower are not competing products even though both say 'cordless' on the box. They hold different amounts of work.

What voltage does affect
Voltage is not irrelevant — it just answers a different question. For a given power output, higher pack voltage means lower current, and lower current means less resistive loss and less sag when the tool is working hard.
In practice that shows up as how well a machine holds its speed in dense, wet snow. A 24 V tool bogs sooner than a 56 V one of similar clearing width, all else equal. All else is rarely equal — motor and auger design matter too — but as a rule of thumb it holds.
So the two numbers answer two questions: watt-hours tell you how long you can work, volts tell you how hard the tool can work before it slows down.

The best cordless platform

Buying a cordless snow shovel is mostly a decision about which battery ecosystem you are joining, because the shovel is the cheap part and the batteries are not. EGO's 56V line is the strongest argument in this category: the same pack that runs this shovel runs their 21-inch two-battery snow blower, so the natural upgrade path costs you a tool and not a tool plus a battery set.
The tool itself is a 12-inch paddle auger with a directional chute the maker rates at 60 degrees of adjustment and a throw of up to 25 feet. Chute control matters more than it sounds: without it you throw snow wherever the machine points, which on a walkway means onto the part you just cleared.
Twelve inches is the honest limitation. That is a path width for steps, a deck, a walk to the mailbox, and the strip in front of a garage door. It is not a driveway machine. Point a 12-inch shovel at a two-car drive and you will be there a long time, and the battery will not last.

Buying into a battery platform for one seasonal 12-inch tool rarely makes sense. If you do not already own Greenworks 40V equipment, you are paying for a battery, a charger and an ecosystem to clear a walkway. Buy a corded tool or stay on the platform you already have.
Cordless outdoor tools are a platform purchase, and this is the clearest case of it in the category. If there is already a Greenworks 40V mower or blower in your garage, this shovel costs you a bare tool and a charge cycle. If there is not, you are buying a battery, a charger and an ecosystem for one seasonal 12-inch tool, and that math rarely works.
On the voltage question, 40 V sits between Snow Joe's 24 V and EGO's 56 V. Higher pack voltage means the motor can draw the same power at lower current, which generally means less sag under load in dense snow. It is not a guarantee — motor and auger design matter too — but as a rule of thumb it holds.
Greenworks rates it for snow up to about 6 inches deep, consistent with every 12-inch paddle-auger tool here, and does not publish a weight or throw distance on the listing we read.
Twelve inches remains a walkway, step and deck width. For a driveway of any size the honest comparison is an electric snow blower, which costs more but moves several times the snow per minute.

Lightest cordless with a published weight

13 inches wide, 17.2 pounds, dual-handle — the cordless shovel that publishes the number that decides whether you finish.
Weight is the spec that decides whether an electric shovel gets used, because you carry it — there are no wheels on any of these. At a published 17.2 pounds this is a tool most adults can hold out in front of them for twenty minutes. That is not true of everything in the category.
The path is 13 inches wide by 6 inches deep. Read the depth carefully: six inches is the maximum bite, not the maximum storm. In a 10-inch snowfall you take two passes at different heights, which is slower but perfectly workable — and is how you should be clearing anyway.
The 24-volt platform is the compromise. It keeps the tool light and cheap, and it is the reason the machine bogs in dense, wet snow where a 56-volt tool keeps its speed. If your snow is typically wet and heavy, the extra voltage is worth paying for.
One thing no cordless snow shovel currently offers is wheels. It is a common search and the answer is honest: this class is carried, not pushed. If you need something that rolls, you need an electric snow blower, not a shovel.

Best cordless blower overall
EGO Power+ SNT2112 21-in Snow Blower

The steel auger is the reason this model exists. EGO's own comparison is against the SNT2102, which uses a rubber-edged auger, and they state the steel version cuts through ice and snow 50 percent faster. That is a manufacturer claim, but the underlying engineering is uncontroversial: a rigid steel edge bites crusted snow that a flexible one rides over.
It also changes where you can use it. A steel single-stage auger touches the ground — that is how single-stage machines clear to the surface — so on gravel it becomes a stone thrower, and on pavers or a sealed asphalt apron you want the highest skid setting and a slow walking pace.
EGO states up to 8 inches of snow on a 12-car driveway from two 5.0 Ah packs on one charge, and a throw distance up to 40 feet. Both are best-case figures on the maker's terms, and both are in the right order of magnitude for a two-battery 56V machine.
The warranty is the quiet signal. Five years on the tool and three on the batteries is longer than most of this category offers, and battery life is where cordless outdoor equipment usually disappoints. If your driveway is gravel, stop here and read that page instead — this is the wrong machine for it, whatever else it does well.

Snow Joe publishes a runtime for this tool — up to 22 minutes — which is more than most makers in this class will commit to in print. Treat it as a best case on light snow. Battery tools draw current in proportion to the work they do, and dense wet snow is several times the work of powder, so the same pack that lasts 22 minutes on a dry day will not on a wet one.
The 11-inch head is the point of the tool, not a shortcoming. Stair treads are usually 10 to 11 inches deep, which means an 11-inch auger clears a step in one pass and a 13-inch one does not fit. The same narrowness is what lets you clear a path between two parked cars.
The 7-inch depth is worth noticing because it is deeper than the wider 13-inch model's 6-inch rating. Depth and width trade against each other for a fixed motor output; Snow Joe chose depth here.
It is not a driveway tool and nobody should buy it as one. For a short concrete driveway the honest comparison is against a 30-inch pusher, which costs less, never needs charging, and clears faster.

The upgrade path is the real decision
The shovel is the cheap part of a cordless purchase. Batteries and chargers are the expensive part, and they are what tie you to a platform for years.
EGO 56V has the strongest snow lineup: the same packs run a 12-inch snow shovel, a 21-inch single-stage blower and a 24-inch two-stage machine, plus mowers, trimmers and blowers for the rest of the year. If you expect to add a real snow blower later, this is the platform where that costs you a bare tool rather than a whole system.
Greenworks 40V is a broad general yard-tool platform with a modest snow presence. It makes sense if you already own into it. It is a poor reason to buy in.
Snow Joe 24V is snow-focused and inexpensive, with the smallest packs. It is a reasonable buy for a walkway tool you never intend to upgrade, and a poor foundation if you might want a blower.
Cold weather and battery capacity
Lithium-ion cells deliver less usable energy when cold, which is inconvenient given what these tools are for. The published watt-hour figure is a nominal, room-temperature number, and real winter runtime is shorter.
The practical mitigations are the boring ones: store packs indoors and bring them out when you start, do not leave a pack sitting in an unheated garage between passes, and charge indoors. Nobody publishes a cold-derating curve for consumer packs, so we are not going to invent a percentage — the direction is certain and the magnitude is not something we can honestly quantify.
