There is no consistent technical difference between a snow blower and a snow thrower. Manufacturers use both terms for the same machines, and some use them interchangeably in a single listing. The distinction that actually matters is the number of stages — one auger doing everything, or an auger plus a separate impeller — and that is what you should be comparing instead.
Where the two words came from
It is tempting to assume a precise engineering distinction hiding behind two terms this similar. There is a folk version that gets repeated everywhere: that a "thrower" is single-stage and a "blower" is two-stage. It is a reasonable-sounding rule and it does not survive contact with actual product listings.
Look at what the makers do. Toro brands its walk-behind machines "Power Max" and "SnowMaster" and uses "snowthrower" in its own documentation for machines of both stage counts. Snow Joe calls the corded 22-inch SJ627E an electric snow thrower in some places and a snow blower in others. EGO's model numbers all begin SNT — snow thrower — across single-stage and two-stage machines alike.
So the terms are marketing vocabulary, regional habit and search-engine hedging rather than specification. Neither word tells you anything reliable about the machine, which is why comparing "blowers" to "throwers" is comparing two synonyms.
The real distinction: one stage or two
Single-stage. One auger collects the snow and throws it in the same motion. That auger reaches the ground, so the machine scrapes to bare pavement — genuinely useful, because nothing is left behind to melt and refreeze. The same ground contact means it cannot be used on gravel at all, and the auger's grip is what pulls the machine forward.
Two-stage. An auger collects and feeds a separate high-speed impeller that does the throwing. The auger is held clear of the ground by adjustable skid shoes, which is what makes gravel possible and what leaves a thin packed layer behind. Two-stage machines are heavier, cost more, throw further, and are almost always self-propelled because they are too heavy to push.
What the stage count actually decides

How we picked
- Stage count — the specification the two marketing terms obscure, and the one that decides surface compatibility
- Published clearing width and intake depth, which set pass count and whether deep snow needs two passes
- Stated throughput in lb/min where a maker publishes one, since it is the only spec that converts to minutes
- Energy source and what it costs: cord amperage, or battery watt-hours and whether packs are included
- Whether the machine is self-propelled, which matters far more on a slope than either word on the box

Best cordless blower overall
EGO Power+ SNT2112 21-in Snow Blower
A steel-auger 21-inch machine on two 56V packs, with a 40-foot stated throw and a warranty that says EGO expects it to last.
The steel auger is the reason this model exists. EGO's own comparison is against the SNT2102, which uses a rubber-edged auger, and they state the steel version cuts through ice and snow 50 percent faster. That is a manufacturer claim, but the underlying engineering is uncontroversial: a rigid steel edge bites crusted snow that a flexible one rides over.
It also changes where you can use it. A steel single-stage auger touches the ground — that is how single-stage machines clear to the surface — so on gravel it becomes a stone thrower, and on pavers or a sealed asphalt apron you want the highest skid setting and a slow walking pace.
EGO states up to 8 inches of snow on a 12-car driveway from two 5.0 Ah packs on one charge, and a throw distance up to 40 feet. Both are best-case figures on the maker's terms, and both are in the right order of magnitude for a two-battery 56V machine.
The warranty is the quiet signal. Five years on the tool and three on the batteries is longer than most of this category offers, and battery life is where cordless outdoor equipment usually disappoints. If your driveway is gravel, stop here and read that page instead — this is the wrong machine for it, whatever else it does well.

Most snow moved per dollar
Snow Joe SJ627E 22-in Corded Snow Blower
840 pounds of snow a minute from a wall socket, at 35 pounds and a fraction of a cordless machine's price.
This machine exists to make a point about arithmetic. Snow Joe states it moves up to 840 pounds of snow per minute through a 22-inch by 13-inch intake. The best-documented electric shovel in this build, the Toro Power Shovel, is rated at 300 pounds per minute through a 12-by-6-inch path. That is not a small difference in degree; it is a different job.
Work through a driveway with it. A 20-by-40-foot drive under 6 inches of fresh snow contains very roughly two to four thousand pounds of snow depending on density. At the stated 840 lb/min that is a few minutes of actual throughput — the clock is dominated by walking and turning, not by the machine.
The 13-inch intake depth is the underrated spec. Most single-stage machines in this price class top out around 8 to 10 inches, which means a foot of snow needs layered passes. Thirteen inches takes most storms in one.
The cord is the price. Fifteen amps over a long, thin extension cord is a voltage-drop problem, so you need a heavy-gauge, cold-flexible outdoor cord, and you spend the whole clear aware of where it is. Measure your outlet-to-far-corner distance before you buy — beyond about 100 feet, go cordless.
What works
- 840 lb/min is roughly triple what the best electric shovel here moves
- 13 inches of intake depth handles a real storm in one pass
- 35 lb published weight makes it manageable to turn and store

Gravel, and everything else hard
EGO Power+ SNT2400 24-in Two-Stage
A true two-stage, self-propelled 24-inch machine — the only configuration in this build that belongs on a gravel driveway.
Skip this one
The only two-stage machine we can verify here, and the one to skip unless you actually need a second stage — EGO does not include batteries with it, so the real price is the machine plus two high-capacity packs and a charger. If your driveway is paved and flat, a single-stage machine does the job for substantially less.
The single most useful thing to understand about snow blowers is the difference between one stage and two, because it decides which surfaces you can use the machine on at all.
A single-stage machine has one auger that both picks the snow up and throws it, and it does that by contacting the surface. That is why it clears down to bare pavement — and why it will pick up gravel and fling it at your garage door. A two-stage machine has a serrated auger that gathers snow and a separate impeller that throws it, and the whole assembly rides on adjustable skid shoes with the auger held above the ground. That gap is the entire reason two-stage machines work on gravel.
So on a gravel driveway this is not a preference, it is the requirement. Set the skid shoes so the auger clears the stone by roughly an inch, accept that you will leave a thin layer of packed snow, and stop expecting bare-surface results.

The gentler auger

Skip this one
Skip this one if refrozen crust is your normal problem rather than fresh powder. EGO's own comparison puts the steel-auger SNT2112 50% faster through ice and snow, and crust is exactly where a rubber edge gives up.
This is the baseline 21-inch EGO and the machine the steel-auger SNT2112 is measured against. EGO states the newer model cuts 50 percent faster; the corollary is that this one is 50 percent slower through the hard stuff, which tells you exactly what you are trading.
There is a case for the rubber edge and it is not just price. A rubber-edged auger scrapes less aggressively, which matters on a surface you care about — a sealed asphalt drive, a paver apron, a painted garage floor. It is still a single-stage machine and still contacts the ground, so gravel remains out of scope, but it is the gentler of the two.
The listing we read publishes less than the SNT2112's: no throw distance, no weight. We are not going to carry over the newer model's figures, because they are different machines with different augers.
If your snow is usually fresh and light and your surface is one you would rather not scratch, this is a rational buy. If you are fighting refrozen plow ridges every week, buy the steel auger and stop reading.

Mid-size driveways on a budget
Snow Joe SJ625E 21-in Corded Snow Blower
A 21-inch, 15-amp machine at up to 800 lb/min — the SJ627E's slightly smaller, slightly cheaper sibling.
The SJ625E and the SJ627E are close enough that the choice is usually made on price and on one inch of width. Snow Joe states 800 pounds per minute here against 840 for the wider machine — a 5 percent difference that will never be noticeable in a driveway.
The specification that is genuinely missing is intake depth. The SJ627E publishes 13 inches; the SJ625E listing we read does not publish a figure at all. That matters in a deep storm, because intake depth is what decides whether you take one pass or two, and we are not going to assume the two machines share it.
Both are 15-amp corded single-stage machines with steel augers and 180-degree chutes, and both are subject to the same cord constraint: a heavy-gauge, cold-rated outdoor extension cord is not optional, and your working radius is however long it is.
If the price difference is small, take the SJ627E for the published depth spec and the second headlight. If it is not, this is a lot of capable machine for the money on a short or mid-size driveway.

The one place the words do differ, slightly
In general American usage "snow thrower" is somewhat more common for smaller walk-behind machines and "snow blower" for larger ones, and "snow blower" is far more common overall. That is a tendency in how people talk, not a rule manufacturers follow, and it is not a basis for a purchase.
If you are searching for a machine, search both. You will find the same products under both terms, occasionally at different prices, and you will find listings that use both words about a single item.
So which should you buy?
Ignore the noun and answer three questions. Is your driveway gravel? If yes, you need two stages and nothing else will do — snow blower on gravel. Is it longer than about 100 feet from an outdoor outlet? If yes, corded is out. Do you get deep, wet, end-of-storm snow and a plow berm? If yes, single-stage will disappoint you — heavy snow.
If the answer to all three is no — a paved, reasonably flat driveway near a power source — then a single-stage machine is the right architecture whatever the box calls it, and the remaining decision is width and cord versus battery. What size snow blower do I need works that through.
