Snow Removal Glossary

Every term you will meet on a spec sheet, defined in one line, with a link to the page where it actually decides something.

Snow equipment is sold in vocabulary that assumes you already know it. This page defines the terms in one line each and links to where each one actually changes a buying decision. If you only learn two, learn single-stage versus two-stage, and eutectic point.

Ice and chemistry terms

De-icer vocabulary

Reading a spec sheet in sixty seconds

Once the vocabulary is in place, most listings can be triaged quickly. The order below is deliberate — each step can eliminate a product outright, so working through it in sequence saves comparing specs that were never going to matter.

  1. Find the stage count first. Single-stage or two-stage decides which surfaces the machine can be used on at all. On gravel, a single-stage machine is disqualified regardless of everything else on the page.
  2. Then intake depth, not clearing width. Width sets how many lanes you walk; depth sets whether a storm is one pass or two. Width is the number the marketing leads with and the less useful of the pair.
  3. Then throughput, if it is published. Pounds per minute or tons per hour is the only figure that converts to minutes in your driveway. Most makers omit it; treat a published one as a good sign.
  4. Then the energy figure. Amperage for a corded machine, watt-hours for a battery one. Watt-hours are volts times amp-hours, and a listing that gives you amp-hours without volts has told you nothing comparable.
  5. Then weight — and notice if it is missing. On any tool you carry or lift, an unpublished weight is the specification the maker chose not to compete on.

The same triage works on a bag of de-icer, with different fields: the active chemistry, the published lowest effective temperature, and the coverage rate per pound. If a bag names no chemistry and publishes no temperature, it has not told you whether it works on the night you need it.

A note on spelling

You will occasionally meet non-US sources using a different spelling of "plow". This site is written for a US audience and uses American spelling throughout — plow, color, meter, aluminum. The machine is the same whichever spelling you arrived on.

Snow blower or snow thrower?

Used interchangeably in practice, and no manufacturer draws a hard line. Some purists reserve "thrower" for single-stage machines that throw snow in one motion and "blower" for two-stage machines where an impeller does the throwing — but the marketing does not follow that rule, and you will find both words on the same product family.

Buy on the stage count, not on the noun. That distinction is real and it is the one at the top of this page.

Questions people ask

What does single-stage mean on a snow blower?
One auger both gathers and throws the snow, and it touches the ground as it does so. That contact is why a single-stage machine scrapes down to bare pavement, and why it cannot be used on gravel — it picks up and throws stone.
What is the difference between a snow blower and a snow thrower?
In practice, nothing — the terms are used interchangeably and manufacturers do not apply them consistently. Buy on the stage count instead, which is a real distinction that decides which surfaces the machine can be used on.
What are skid shoes for?
They are adjustable feet on a two-stage machine's housing that set how far the auger rides above the ground. Setting them for about an inch of clearance is what makes a machine usable on a gravel driveway.
What does eutectic point mean for ice melt?
It is the lowest temperature at which a salt's brine can remain liquid. The practical working temperature is well above it, because the melting rate collapses as the chemistry approaches its limit — which is why rock salt effectively stops around 15 to 20°F.
