Snow Shovel Blade Materials, Compared

The blade decides two things the handle cannot: whether snow sticks to it, and whether it damages what you are clearing.

Poly is light and surface-safe but goes brittle in deep cold. An aluminum wear strip on poly is the best general compromise. UHMW polyethylene has the lowest friction, so wet snow slides off instead of packing on. Steel is the only material that cuts refrozen crust, and the only one that will damage your driveway.

The four materials

Poly (polypropylene or polyethylene). The default. Light, cheap, and soft enough that it cannot damage any residential surface. Two weaknesses: wet snow sticks to it, and polymer stiffens and gets brittle as temperature falls — which is why cheap shovels break while levering frozen ridges rather than while moving snow.

Poly with an aluminum wear strip. A thin metal strip along the leading edge. It stops the lip rounding off after a couple of seasons, which is how poly blades actually die, and adds cutting ability without the weight of a full steel blade. The strip is metal, so on decking and delicate surfaces it can still mark. This is the best general-purpose specification.

UHMW polyethylene. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, the material used for conveyor wear strips and truck-bed liners, chosen for very low friction and high impact resistance at low temperature. In a snow tool that translates directly: snow releases instead of packing, and the blade does not go brittle in the cold. It is the premium pusher material and the makers using it rate their tools for decks and pavers.

Steel. Heavy, aggressive, and the only material that reliably breaks the compacted, refrozen plow berm. Also the only one that will score sealed asphalt, chip a paver edge and destroy a composite board. It is a specialist tool masquerading as a general one.

Blade material versus driveway surface

UHMW — ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene — is the material specification that separates this from a $25 pusher. It is the same family of plastic used for conveyor wear strips and truck-bed liners, chosen for a very low coefficient of friction and high impact resistance at low temperature. The practical consequence is that snow slides off it, including the heavy wet snow that packs solid onto a cheap blade and turns pushing into scraping.

The maker states the edge self-sharpens with use and needs no maintenance, and lists the tool as usable on concrete, blacktop, pavers, decks, roofs and ice rinks. That surface list is unusually broad and is the reason we recommend it where a metal edge would be a liability.

Width is the other half of the argument. A 30-inch blade covers 67 percent more ground per pass than an 18-inch shovel. On a 20-by-30-foot driveway that is the difference between roughly 20 passes and roughly 12 — and each of those passes is a push, not a lift.

It is not a complete answer. Nothing that pushes deals with the plow berm, and on a long driveway you eventually run out of anywhere to push to. Pair it with a shovel, or with a machine.

What works

Backs that already hurt

The physics here are simple enough to check without owning one. A snow shovel is a lever, and the load on your lumbar spine depends on how far the weight sits from your hips. A conventional straight-shaft shovel makes your upper hand the fulcrum and your lower back the counterweight. The Shovelution adds a second, spring-loaded grip partway down the shaft, so the lower hand takes the lifting and the spine straightens earlier in the throw.

Snow Joe states the design reduces back strain by up to 30 percent. That is the manufacturer's number and we cannot verify it. What we can verify is the tare weight: 3.5 pounds for an 18-inch blade, which is genuinely low. Weight matters more than it sounds. Twelve pounds of wet snow on a 3.5-pound shovel is a 15.5-pound lift; the same load on a 6-pound steel shovel is 18 pounds, and you are doing it three hundred times.

The blade is poly with an aluminum wear strip. That combination is the right compromise for most driveways: poly is light and does not stick as badly as bare steel, and the aluminum edge keeps the leading lip from rounding off after two seasons. It is not a gravel tool — the wear strip will scoop stone and fling it, and on a composite deck it can leave marks.

A steel blade is the wrong buy as your only shovel unless your driveway is poured concrete. It will score sealed asphalt, chip paver edges and ruin composite decking. Buy it as the second tool for the plow ridge, not as the one you use every storm.

This is a tool for one job that plastic shovels genuinely cannot do: cutting the compacted, refrozen ridge the municipal plow leaves across the end of your driveway. That ridge is not snow by the time you get to it. It is a slab, and a poly blade skates off it.

A steel edge and a stiff fiberglass shaft give you the ability to chop. That capability comes with an obligation: a steel edge is also perfectly capable of chewing the sealant off asphalt, scoring pavers and destroying a composite deck. This is a concrete tool. If your driveway is anything else, buy a poly blade and accept a slower fight with the ridge.

Bully Tools builds to a commercial spec — the fiberglass handles and heavier gauge steel are what landscaping crews buy — and the practical effect is that it does not become a consumable. Whether that is worth the price depends on how many years you plan to keep it.

The weight is unpublished and it will not be light. If you already have back trouble this is the wrong shovel, and the strain-reducing designs are the right ones. Keep this one for the ridge and use something else for the driveway.

A pusher that will not mark a surface

The single largest reduction in shoveling effort available to a homeowner is not an ergonomic handle. It is not lifting at all. A pusher slides the snow off the surface instead of picking it up, which removes the entire lift-and-throw motion that hurts people.

The constraint is that pushing only works while the snow is loose and while you have somewhere to push it to. On a 60-foot driveway you are moving snow 30 feet, and at some point the windrow in front of the blade is bigger than the blade. The technique is to push at an angle across the drive, peeling snow to the side in strips, not to bulldoze the whole length.

Poly is the right material here specifically because it is soft. Nothing on this tool can scratch a paver or a composite board, which is why it is our default recommendation on paver driveways and on decks.

It cannot chop. When the plow berm freezes you will need a steel edge or an ice chisel — the pusher will ride over the top of it.

What works

Manplow makes a specific and unusual claim about this edge: that it clears uneven surfaces including aggregate, broken concrete and gravel, and that unlike a steel edge it will not scratch or gouge wood or composite decking. That is exactly the gap in the manual-tool market, and it is why this appears on our gravel and paver pages.

Understand what "gravel" means here. A flexible glide edge riding over loose stone is not the same as a rigid steel scraper digging into it — but no manual pusher makes gravel easy, and on a gravel drive you will still move some stone. The realistic use is a gravel drive that has frozen hard, or a mixed surface with an aggregate apron.

The published edge life — 300 to 350 shoveling hours before replacement — is the kind of number nobody else in this category publishes, and it is genuinely useful. At a generous 40 hours of shoveling a winter, that is seven or eight seasons.

The width is the catch. At 42 inches this is a commercial tool. For a normal two-car driveway the 30-inch UHMW pusher is the more sensible buy, and for a gravel drive that needs real clearing a two-stage machine with adjustable skid shoes is the honest answer.

What works

Why wet snow sticks, and what to do about it

Wet snow adheres to a smooth blade because of surface tension in the liquid film between the snow and the plastic. Once a layer sticks, every subsequent shovelful sticks to that, and your throw turns into a scrape.

Two design answers exist. The first is surface texture: ribbed and angled blade patterns break up the contact area so the load releases. The second is material: UHMW's low coefficient of friction means much less adhesion in the first place. Both work; the second works better and costs more.

The folk remedy — spraying the blade with cooking spray or silicone — does help temporarily. It also wears off within a clear or two and puts oil on your driveway, so treat it as a stopgap rather than a strategy.

The cold-brittleness problem

Polymers become progressively stiffer and less impact-tolerant as temperature falls. That is why a poly shovel that is fine all November cracks in January, and why the failure almost always happens on a hard, sudden load — levering at a frozen ridge, hitting an expansion joint, chipping at ice.

The practical rule is simple: do not use a poly blade as a chisel. If you need to break compacted ice, use a steel-edged tool or an ice chisel designed for it, and keep the poly shovel for snow. UHMW is markedly better in this respect, which is part of what the premium buys.

So which do you buy?

  • One shovel for a hard-surface driveway — poly with an aluminum wear strip.
  • One pusher for a big flat area — UHMW, in a width your driveway can actually use.
  • A deck, a paver drive, or anything you would hate to scratch — bare poly or UHMW only.
  • The frozen plow berm — steel, kept as a second tool and used only for that.
  • Gravel — the softest edge you can find, and low expectations. See gravel driveways.

Questions people ask

Is a metal or plastic snow shovel better?
Plastic for the driveway, metal for the frozen ridge. A poly blade cannot damage a residential surface and is much lighter; a steel blade cuts compacted ice that poly rides over. Most households are best served by owning both rather than compromising on one.
Do snow shovels with metal edges damage driveways?
A full steel blade can score sealed asphalt and chip paver edges. A thin aluminum wear strip on a poly blade is much less aggressive but can still mark composite decking. On concrete in good condition, neither is a practical problem.
What is UHMW and is it worth paying for?
