A plow pushes snow sideways to a pile; a snow blower throws it clear. Plows are faster over large open areas with somewhere to put the snow, and useless once the piles have nowhere to grow. Blowers are slower per pass and do not care where the snow goes, which on a residential driveway is usually the deciding factor.
Two different physics
A plow relocates. The blade pushes a windrow ahead of and to the side of itself. The work is proportional to how much snow you are moving and how far, and the limit is where the snow ends up. On a big open lot with edges to push to, a plow is dramatically faster than anything else.
A blower removes. The auger and impeller pick the snow up and throw it clear, typically 20 to 40 feet depending on the machine. The work per pass is higher, and there is no accumulating windrow, so the last pass is as easy as the first.
That asymmetry is the whole comparison. Plows are efficient until they run out of room. Blowers are steady and do not run out of anything except fuel or battery.
The residential problem with plows
A typical driveway is a corridor with a house at one end, a road at the other, and lawn or planting at the sides. There are only a few places a plow can put snow, and they fill up.
By midwinter, the banks along a plowed driveway are solid, load-bearing and often chest high. At that point the plow blade is pushing snow into a wall, which does not work — and the snow that does not stay on the pile slumps back onto the drive, then melts and refreezes across it.
A blower avoids this by throwing over the bank. That is why on a residential drive in a snowy climate a blower usually wins the season even where a plow wins the individual storm.
What a plow needs to work
- A vehicle rated for it. A plow blade puts substantial load on the front suspension and cooling system. This is a real requirement, not a formality.
- Room at the edges. Somewhere for the snow to go all season, not just in December.
- A hard, even surface. A plow blade rides the surface. On gravel it drags stone; on pavers it catches heaved units.
- Space to maneuver. Backing and turning with a blade takes room that a walk-behind machine does not need.
- Storage. A blade is bulky and heavy, and it lives somewhere for eight months.
That list is why plows suit rural properties and long open driveways, and why they are a poor fit for a suburban two-car drive with a shrub bed on one side.

Gravel, and everything else hard

The single most useful thing to understand about snow blowers is the difference between one stage and two, because it decides which surfaces you can use the machine on at all.
A single-stage machine has one auger that both picks the snow up and throws it, and it does that by contacting the surface. That is why it clears down to bare pavement — and why it will pick up gravel and fling it at your garage door. A two-stage machine has a serrated auger that gathers snow and a separate impeller that throws it, and the whole assembly rides on adjustable skid shoes with the auger held above the ground. That gap is the entire reason two-stage machines work on gravel.
So on a gravel driveway this is not a preference, it is the requirement. Set the skid shoes so the auger clears the stone by roughly an inch, accept that you will leave a thin layer of packed snow, and stop expecting bare-surface results.

Snow Joe SJ627E 22-in Corded Snow Blower
840 pounds of snow a minute from a wall socket, at 35 pounds and a fraction of a cordless machine's price.
This machine exists to make a point about arithmetic. Snow Joe states it moves up to 840 pounds of snow per minute through a 22-inch by 13-inch intake. The best-documented electric shovel in this build, the Toro Power Shovel, is rated at 300 pounds per minute through a 12-by-6-inch path. That is not a small difference in degree; it is a different job.
Work through a driveway with it. A 20-by-40-foot drive under 6 inches of fresh snow contains very roughly two to four thousand pounds of snow depending on density. At the stated 840 lb/min that is a few minutes of actual throughput — the clock is dominated by walking and turning, not by the machine.
The 13-inch intake depth is the underrated spec. Most single-stage machines in this price class top out around 8 to 10 inches, which means a foot of snow needs layered passes. Thirteen inches takes most storms in one.
The cord is the price. Fifteen amps over a long, thin extension cord is a voltage-drop problem, so you need a heavy-gauge, cold-flexible outdoor cord, and you spend the whole clear aware of where it is. Measure your outlet-to-far-corner distance before you buy — beyond about 100 feet, go cordless.
What works

Uneven and aggregate surfaces

Manplow makes a specific and unusual claim about this edge: that it clears uneven surfaces including aggregate, broken concrete and gravel, and that unlike a steel edge it will not scratch or gouge wood or composite decking. That is exactly the gap in the manual-tool market, and it is why this appears on our gravel and paver pages.
Understand what "gravel" means here. A flexible glide edge riding over loose stone is not the same as a rigid steel scraper digging into it — but no manual pusher makes gravel easy, and on a gravel drive you will still move some stone. The realistic use is a gravel drive that has frozen hard, or a mixed surface with an aggregate apron.
The published edge life — 300 to 350 shoveling hours before replacement — is the kind of number nobody else in this category publishes, and it is genuinely useful. At a generous 40 hours of shoveling a winter, that is seven or eight seasons.
The width is the catch. At 42 inches this is a commercial tool. For a normal two-car driveway the 30-inch UHMW pusher is the more sensible buy, and for a gravel drive that needs real clearing a two-stage machine with adjustable skid shoes is the honest answer.

Wide, flat driveways

A manual pusher is a plow blade with you as the engine, and it inherits the same limitation: it needs somewhere to push to. On a long or enclosed driveway it runs out of room in exactly the same way a vehicle plow does, and rather sooner.
UHMW — ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene — is the material specification that separates this from a $25 pusher. It is the same family of plastic used for conveyor wear strips and truck-bed liners, chosen for a very low coefficient of friction and high impact resistance at low temperature. The practical consequence is that snow slides off it, including the heavy wet snow that packs solid onto a cheap blade and turns pushing into scraping.
The maker states the edge self-sharpens with use and needs no maintenance, and lists the tool as usable on concrete, blacktop, pavers, decks, roofs and ice rinks. That surface list is unusually broad and is the reason we recommend it where a metal edge would be a liability.
Width is the other half of the argument. A 30-inch blade covers 67 percent more ground per pass than an 18-inch shovel. On a 20-by-30-foot driveway that is the difference between roughly 20 passes and roughly 12 — and each of those passes is a push, not a lift.
It is not a complete answer. Nothing that pushes deals with the plow berm, and on a long driveway you eventually run out of anywhere to push to. Pair it with a shovel, or with a machine.
What works

The middle option: a manual pusher
A wide manual pusher is a plow blade with you as the engine, and it shares the same character: efficient in the open, limited by where the snow goes. On a short driveway that limit never bites, which is why a pusher is the correct answer on a small drive. See snow pushers.
The same logic applies to ATV and tractor blades, which sit between a truck plow and a walk-behind machine. They need the same room and the same surface conditions as a truck plow, at a smaller scale.
