Published working temperatures are manufacturer figures for the specific products we link to, not generic chemistry constants. Two makers publish no figure at all, and those cells say so rather than borrowing a number from a competitor.
Why melting slows long before the published floor
A de-icer works by dissolving into the thin film of liquid water that sits on ice, lowering that film's freezing point so the ice in contact with it melts. The brine then spreads, works downward, and eventually breaks the bond between the ice and the pavement.
Every salt has a theoretical limit — the lowest temperature at which its brine can stay liquid at all. But the useful working temperature is well above that limit, because the rate at which the reaction proceeds collapses as you approach it. A product that can technically depress the freezing point at 5°F may take so long to do anything that the sun beats it.
That is why the practical figure for rock salt is 15 to 20°F rather than its textbook limit. It is not that nothing happens below that; it is that not enough happens overnight to matter on a driveway you need in the morning.
Exothermic chemistry is why calcium chloride starts faster
Calcium chloride dissolves exothermically: it releases heat as it goes into solution. That means it begins melting on contact rather than waiting for ambient warmth to start the process, which is exactly what you want from a treatment applied at 9 p.m. for a surface you need at 7 a.m.
Sodium chloride dissolution is close to thermally neutral by comparison, so it depends on heat that is already there. In deep cold there is none, which compounds the problem — the chemistry is slowest exactly when the conditions are hardest.
Form matters alongside chemistry. Pellets carry enough mass to bore down through an ice layer; flakes and fine crystals tend to dissolve at the surface and spread sideways. For breaking a bonded sheet, pellets are the better shape.

Do not use calcium chloride on concrete poured within the last twelve months, on composite decking, or where runoff drains straight into planting beds. It is the right chemistry for extreme cold and the wrong one for a new driveway.
Calcium chloride is the one de-icer that keeps working when the thermometer collapses. The manufacturer publishes an effective temperature of -40°F, and the reason is two-fold: calcium chloride depresses the freezing point further than sodium or magnesium chloride, and it dissolves exothermically — it gives off heat as it goes into solution, so it starts melting rather than waiting for the sun.
That aggressiveness is also the caution. All chlorides drive freeze-thaw cycling in concrete by keeping water liquid in the pores when it would otherwise be frozen, and calcium chloride does it hardest because it works at the lowest temperatures. On concrete less than a year old, where the surface has not fully cured, that is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.
Application rate is where most people go wrong. More is not faster. Over-application leaves undissolved pellets and a brine film that is itself slippery, wastes product, and increases everything running off into your soil.

Every de-icer works the same way: dissolve something in the thin film of water on the ice and you lower that water's freezing point, so the ice melts at a temperature it otherwise would not. The differences between products are which salt does the dissolving, how cold it keeps working, and what it does to concrete, plants and paws.
Magnesium chloride is the mild end of the working chlorides. Green Gobbler publishes an effective temperature of -15°F, which is genuinely useful — plain rock salt stops doing meaningful work somewhere around 15 to 20°F, so on a cold night rock salt is decoration and this is not.
The pet claim deserves a precise reading. Magnesium chloride is less likely to irritate paws and less likely to cause stomach upset than rock salt, which is why the maker positions it that way. It is not food, and "pet safe" is not "pet edible". Wipe paws after walks regardless of what you spread.

Safe Paw Ice Melt
The one product here with no chloride in it at all — the right answer on composite decking, new concrete and around metal.
Almost every de-icer on a hardware store shelf is a chloride: sodium, calcium, magnesium or potassium. Chlorides are cheap and they work, and the chloride ion is also the thing that corrodes rebar, attacks metal fixings and gets blamed for spalled concrete. Safe Paw contains none of them.
The chemistry is a crystalline amide core carrying glycols, and the manufacturer states it is non-corrosive and effective to -2°F, with coverage of about 100 square feet per pound. That coverage figure is unusually useful: a 35-pound pail covers roughly 3,500 square feet at the stated rate, which is several storms on a normal driveway and walkway.
The -2°F floor is the honest trade. Calcium chloride keeps working far below that; this does not. On a genuinely cold night in a cold climate a chloride-free product will underperform, and pretending otherwise would be a disservice.
Where it wins outright is on surfaces where chloride is the risk rather than the temperature: composite decking, concrete poured within the last year, anything with exposed metal fasteners, and beds where salt-sensitive plants sit downhill of the runoff.

Purity is the specification that matters on a bag of ice melt, and it is the one shoppers ignore. A "calcium chloride blend" might be a fifth calcium chloride and four fifths rock salt, in which case you are paying a premium price for mostly sodium chloride performance. At a stated 94 percent, almost all of this bag is the chemistry you came for.
Snow Joe describes it as generating heat instantly on contact, which is the exothermic behavior calcium chloride is known for and the reason it starts working in the dark and the cold.
The gap is the temperature rating: the listing we read does not publish a lowest effective temperature. Generic calcium chloride figures are widely cited far below zero, but we are not going to attach a generic or a competitor's number to this specific product. Fifty pounds is the right buying unit if you have somewhere dry to keep it. Calcium chloride is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air — and a bag left open in a damp garage turns into a solid brick by February.

On a page about temperature specifically, a product that publishes no lowest effective temperature cannot be recommended for cold. It is a sensible mixed-surface blend and we say so on other pages — but if the question you are asking is "will this work tonight at 5°F", a bag that does not answer it is the wrong bag.
Calcium magnesium acetate — CMA — is not a chloride, and that is the entire point of it. It is used by transport agencies specifically where chloride corrosion of steel is unacceptable, and its inclusion here is why Snow Joe positions this blend as safer for concrete and metals.
The green coating is a better idea than it looks. Ice melt is almost always over-applied, because you cannot see white crystals on white snow and so you keep spreading. A colored product shows your coverage, and coverage discipline is what keeps chloride out of your soil and product in the bag.
The missing figure is the working temperature, which the listing we read does not publish. Acetate-based and blended products generally give up some cold performance in exchange for gentleness, so treat this as a moderate-cold product until the maker publishes a number.
It is a sensible default for the common real-world case: a driveway with a lawn edge, a metal railing and a concrete walk, where you want one bag rather than three. If it is genuinely cold, reach for calcium chloride instead.

What to do below your product's floor
Stop spreading de-icer. Below the working temperature the product does not melt, does not bond-break, and does run off into your soil when the thaw comes. It is the most expensive way to achieve nothing in this category.

- Clear mechanically and completely. Snow left behind melts in afternoon sun and refreezes overnight into exactly the sheet you were trying to avoid.

- Wait for the window. Many deep-cold nights are followed by afternoons above the working temperature. Treating at the right hour beats treating at the wrong one.
The two-product approach
Most households are better served by holding two products than by hunting for one that does everything. Above about 20°F, use the mildest chemistry that works — there is no reason to put the most aggressive chloride on your driveway on a mild night. Below it, calcium chloride is the only chemistry here that reliably does anything.

One caution that overrides temperature entirely: concrete poured within the last twelve months should see no chloride at any temperature. Clear it mechanically and use grit.
